Editing a Product Category

Editing a Product Category

Update a product category's name, base price, or custom fields.

Last updated: Jul 17, 2026

You can edit any product category to update its name, base price, description, or custom fields. Changes to a category's Base Price will be reflected on products in that category the next time a product is saved.

Before you start

You'll need permission to edit product categories. If you don't see an Edit... option, ask your organization's administrator to grant you access.

Something to know about the Base Price

Changing a category's Base Price does not immediately update the price on products that are already using that category. It only affects:

  • New products you assign to this category from now on, and
  • Existing products the next time someone opens and saves them individually.

So if you're correcting a price for products that are already in your list, updating the category alone isn't enough — you'll also need to open each of those products and save them again so they pick up the new price. See Editing a Product.

1. Go to Categories

Click Categories in the left sidebar to see your list of product categories.

2. Find the category

Look through the list, or use the search box to find the category you want to update.

3. Open the actions menu

Click the (three dots) at the end of the category's row.

4. Click Edit...

Select Edit... from the menu. This opens the Edit Product Category page, already filled in with the category's current details.

5. Update the fields you need

You don't have to fill in everything again — only change what needs updating.

FieldEditableWhat happens when you change it
NameYesRenames the category everywhere it's used, including in the Model / Category dropdown when adding or editing products. Must still be unique — you'll get an error only if you use a name that belongs to a different category.
Base PriceYesSets the new default price. See the note above — this doesn't touch products that are already saved with this category.
DescriptionYesReplaces the free-text description.
Custom Fields (if visible to you)YesUpdates the extra fields that show up on products assigned to this category.

6. Save your changes

Click Save to save the category and go back to the category list.

If you're also planning to update the Custom Fields tab, click the small arrow next to Save and choose Save and continue editing... instead — this saves your changes but keeps you on the page.
